Introduction to Sexual Health and Counselling

I attended a Unisa Centre for Applied Psychology accredited workshop in Pretoria from Monday to Wednesday. The workshop was an introduction to Sexual Health and Counselling.

The workshop was facilitated by Professor Elna Mcintosh. The participants ranged from professionals to students. Various topics were covered in the workshop and it was very beneficial to have  dialogue between all the participants as we all got to give input from the different fields we are in.

On the second day of the workshop I did a presentation for the workshop participants on a few of the sex toys on the market. Many of the participants have never been into a sex shop or ever seen a sex toy so it was nice to be able to enlighten them.

Attending the workshop reinforced for me the importance of studying a degree before going into Sexology. I may have the knowledge of sex toys and some knowledge on sexual health issues but I need more education and also a counselling background.

I want to be able to give my customers, and in future my patients, the best service and therapy possible. In order to do this I need to be well informed in sexual health in order to provide my patients with accurate information. I also need to have counselling skills as I am dealing with people on such a intimate level and need to be able to give the best professional advise and therapy.

As most of you know I am studying a BA Social Work degree as this will provide me with a counselling background and I can then further my education and specialize in Sexology.

I think that it is important to study at an accredited institution so that my patients will feel confident knowing that I have been educated correctly and operate in a professional manner.

Once I have completed my Unisa Degree I can then look at accredited institutions to study Sexology. There is no accredited Sexology course in South Africa so more then likely my studies will be done overseas.

A long journey, but it will be so worth it!

Here is my certificate that I received for attending the workshop
